Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 20 (NationPress) The detention of prominent CPI(M) figure and ex-legislator A. Padmakumar in the Sabarimala gold theft incident has ignited a political upheaval in Kerala. The Congress and BJP have ramped up their criticisms against the ruling CPI(M), suggesting that high-ranking officials and even ministers are implicated in this scandal.

Padmakumar was serving as the president of the Travancore Devasom Board in 2019 during the time the alleged fraud occurred in Sabarimala.

This arrest, marking the second significant apprehension following the detention of former TDB president N. Vasu, has amplified demands for a broader investigation and increased scrutiny on the government.

Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan expressed that the arrest has “shocked Kerala,” labeling it a pivotal moment that indicates those associated with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are directly implicated.

“This scandal has resulted in multiple arrests of individuals tied to CM Vijayan — first N. Vasu, now Padmakumar. We firmly believe that former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran plays a significant role. He and prime suspect Unnikrishnan Potti share a close friendship,” he claimed.

Satheesan noted that upon Vasu's arrest, Kadakampally was quick to support him as a “good official.”

“He said this out of fear that Vasu might reveal crucial information. The CPI(M) leadership is aware of what transpired in Sabarimala. We anticipate more leaders will find themselves behind bars. If the High Court hadn’t supervised the investigation, the entire case could have been concealed,” he stated.

In agreement, State BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar remarked, “None of this could occur without CM Vijayan’s awareness. Minister V.N. Vasavan must resign. If the state government cannot safeguard temples from corruption, they should be handed over to Prime Minister Modi’s administration.”

Meanwhile, CPI(M) leaders defended their stance, asserting that the investigation should proceed legally.

Party state secretary M.V. Govindan remarked, “An arrest alone doesn’t signify anything. The party will not protect anyone, but let the legal processes unfold.”

Former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran strongly refuted any allegations.

“In the gold-plating case, neither the initial Vijayan government nor the current one has any involvement. The Devaswom Minister does not handle files — all decisions are made by the TDB. Our responsibilities are limited to managing pilgrimage activities,” he stated.
