Chennai, May 18 (NationPress) The proprietors of two fishing vessels from Kerala have been summoned to the Joint Director of Fisheries in Tamil Nadu on Monday after being charged for breaching the ongoing fishing ban along the eastern coastline. The vessels – a mechanized bottom trawler and a fiber boat – were intercepted by Tamil Nadu authorities for operating unlawfully in the waters near Thoothukudi during the prohibited period.
The Joint Director of Fisheries, who also acts as the adjudicating officer, will supervise further proceedings regarding this case.
As per fisheries department officials, the boats were apprehended on Thursday night during a synchronized inspection conducted by officials from the Fisheries Department, the Fisheries Enforcement Wing, the Coastal Security Group, and representatives from local fishermen.
This operation was initiated following reports from local fishermen about prohibited fishing activities in the area. The inspection team discovered the two Kerala-registered vessels operating 32 nautical miles off the Thoothukudi coast. Both boats were found with a total of 16 fishermen and a considerable catch – 1,732 kilograms of fish and 110 kilograms of fishlings.
Interestingly, the fiber boat was allegedly using illegal light fishing techniques, which are explicitly banned during the fishing ban period.
The authorities have confiscated both vessels and brought the crew ashore for legal action.
A senior fisheries official confirmed that the catch was later auctioned for around Rs 4 lakh.
A formal charge sheet has been lodged against the owners of the two boats for infringing Tamil Nadu’s fishing regulations. “The fishing ban is enforced to safeguard fish breeding during crucial spawning times. Any infringement, particularly by vessels from neighboring states, is treated with utmost seriousness,” stated the official.
This incident highlights the escalating tensions among fishing communities across state lines and the stringent enforcement actions being implemented to ensure adherence to seasonal bans.
