Kochi, Aug 1 (NationPress) The Kerala High Court has requested the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to provide clarity on its position regarding the proposed ropeway at the renowned Sabarimala temple.

Situated in the Western Ghats within Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, Sabarimala is among India's most revered and frequently visited pilgrimage sites, attracting millions of devotees annually.

At an altitude of 3,000 feet, Sabarimala traditionally mandates pilgrims to undertake a 41-day penance followed by a barefoot trek from the banks of the Pampa River.

The Division Bench, consisting of Justice V. Raja Vijayaraghavan and Justice K.V. Jayakumar, was addressing a suo motu petition concerning the construction of the proposed ropeway based on reports provided by the Advocate Commissioner.

The M/s. Eighteenth Step Damodar Cable Company Ltd was advocating for the ropeway, which is set to traverse through the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

During the proceedings, the Court remarked, "Why would anyone pursue this? You lack the capacity to provide adequate facilities for these visitors. Why do you want this influx? It’s incomprehensible."

The Bench further expressed, "From the sketches available, it's unclear where the path is being routed. What is the length? We have no information. It's suggested that a 12-metre-wide area of forest will be cleared, and 6 or 7 pillars will be erected to support the structure."

The Court voiced doubts regarding the permit for this initiative.

It was presented to the bench that compensatory afforestation would take place on 10 acres in Thenmala.

"This forest differs from Thenmala... If it’s a tourist site, you might consider a ropeway. However, examine the existing facilities here," the Court noted.

When the example of cable cars in Palani was mentioned, the Court responded, "Sabarimala is unique. No trees were cut down in Palani."

The Court instructed the Deputy Solicitor General of India to seek guidance from the MoEFCC, which was named as the 6th respondent, regarding the viability of constructing a ropeway through the tiger reserve.

The case has been adjourned for 10 days.

Point of View

I believe that the Kerala High Court's intervention highlights the significance of balancing spiritual accessibility with environmental conservation. The Sabarimala temple, revered by many, must ensure that any development does not compromise the integrity of its natural surroundings. This case serves as a reminder of the need for responsible planning in the face of increasing tourism.
