Kochi, Sep 8 (NationPress) The Kerala High Court has instructed the State Election Commission (SEC) to address a petition disputing the establishment of a polling station within a mosque located in Kummanodu ward, part of the Kizhakkambalam panchayat in Ernakulam district, for the forthcoming local body elections.
These elections are anticipated to occur towards the end of the year.
Justice C.S. Dias, following a brief session, has scheduled the case for additional review on September 15.
"The learned Standing Counsel has requested time to submit a statement. The court has mandated a post for next Monday," the announcement stated.
The petition originates from the Twenty 20 Party in collaboration with Sreesha P.D., a local resident.
They argued that the designation of a mosque as a polling station breaches the SEC’s established guidelines and compromises the tenets of neutrality and secularism.
According to the petition, the SEC had previously issued a circular on January 25, advising district election officials to avoid using places of worship, hospitals, and police stations as polling sites to guarantee that voters can cast their ballots in a secure and impartial atmosphere.
The petitioners asserted that placing a polling booth within a house of worship could suggest that the electoral process is swayed by a specific religion, which contradicts constitutional principles.

The appeal also noted that violence had erupted during the 2020 panchayat elections at the same mosque when it was utilized as a polling station, compelling authorities to relocate it for subsequent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
Despite proposals for alternative locations, such as an Anganwadi center or the Government UP School in Kummanodu, the Panchayat Secretary allegedly proceeded with the plan to establish the booth at the mosque without adequate consultation.
On August 20, Sreesha and other voters submitted a request to the District Collector (Election) seeking the relocation of the polling booth to a neutral venue, but their appeal was disregarded, leading them to escalate the matter to the High Court.
