The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the monsoon’s arrival on Saturday, emphasizing that the rains commenced earlier than the usual onset date of June 1.
Notably, this is the first occurrence since 2009 that the monsoon has set in as early as May 24.
Last week, the IMD had predicted May 27 as the potential onset date, with a margin of error of plus or minus four days—an estimate that has proven to be accurate.
The arrival of the monsoon in Kerala indicates the start of its northward progression, gradually encompassing other regions of the country through June and typically reaching the most distant areas by mid-July.
