Thiruvananthapuram, July 15 (NationPress) The Kerala branch of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), including State Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran and legislator Thomas K. Thomas, has rejected the requests from party national working president Praful Patel to either resign from their legislative positions or switch allegiance to the faction led by Ajit Pawar.
The Kerala NCP remains steadfast as an ally of the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). Tensions within the party escalated after Ajit Pawar separated from the faction led by his uncle and party founder, Sharad Pawar.
Recently, the Election Commission dealt a significant blow to Sharad Pawar by recognizing Ajit Pawar’s faction as the official NCP, granting them the party's name and symbol. Consequently, Sharad Pawar's group has rebranded itself as NCP (Sharad Pawar), or NCP (SP), while the Kerala unit has reiterated its loyalty to the veteran leader.
Praful Patel had previously issued a deadline for the Kerala unit, demanding that its two legislators either resign or join Ajit Pawar’s faction. Although the original deadline was set for May 31, a new letter has been dispatched, emphasizing the potential consequences for non-compliance.
However, Thomas, who also holds the position of state NCP president, has dismissed the recent correspondence.
“Which party do Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule belong to? They (Ajit Pawar and Patel) contested using the same symbol. We are with Pawarji. They have nothing better to do than send letters,” he stated.
“The status of our faction will be determined by the Kerala Assembly Speaker. We have informed the Supreme Court that we stand with Pawar. No institution is above the apex court. Additionally, the NCP is now a state party, not a national one,” Thomas added.
State Minister Saseendran also brushed off Patel’s letter, labeling it “no big deal.”
“At the right time, we will take the necessary steps. We now identify as NCP (SP),” he stated.
The Kerala unit has firmly ruled out any alignment with Ajit Pawar’s faction, which is now a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
It is noteworthy that the Left Front in Kerala recently encountered a similar challenge when JD(S)—another coalition partner—saw its national president and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda align with the BJP. Nevertheless, JD(S) continues to be part of the ruling Left coalition in the state.
