Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 1 (NationPress) Kerala Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian has called on the Central government to swiftly approve the fishermen's savings-cum-relief scheme in the state. The Minister noted that the lack of release of the Centre’s portion of the funding has hindered the state's ability to distribute its share.
He emphasized that this delay is significantly impacting thousands of fishermen, whose livelihoods are already under pressure due to the monsoon and challenging weather conditions.
The initiative aims to assist fishermen during off-seasons while promoting savings habits.
Each participant is expected to contribute Rs 1,500 every month, with both the Central and State governments matching this amount, resulting in a total monthly benefit of Rs 4,500.
This financial aid is provided during non-fishing periods: May, June, and July for marine fishermen, and July, August, and September for those in inland waters.
For the fiscal year 2025-26, there are 1,49,755 fishermen registered in the scheme, comprising 1,35,625 from marine regions and 14,130 from inland waters.
Beneficiaries have already deposited Rs 20.95 crore, which has been reimbursed in the first installment.
The state administration is ready to disburse its portion of the funds. However, according to the guidelines set by the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), funds can only be released following the Central approval and allocation processed through the Sparsh software.
Should the state proceed without the necessary clearance from the Centre, there is uncertainty regarding the reimbursement of the Central share.
The Kerala Government had submitted a request for administrative sanction on June 21 and followed up with another communication on August 6.
Despite these efforts, approval remains pending.
Stressing the severe crisis caused by the ongoing monsoon and tumultuous sea conditions, the Minister urged the Centre to promptly sanction administrative clearance and release its share.
“Timely support is essential to safeguard the livelihoods of our fishermen, who are enduring significant income losses,” stated Cherian.
