Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 3 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted significant rainfall across Kerala in the coming days, driven by a cyclonic circulation in the Gulf of Mannar and nearby regions of south Tamil Nadu.
Numerous districts in the state have been placed under Orange and Yellow alerts until August 7, with southern Kerala expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall.
The IMD notes that the weather system is located at an altitude of 5.8 km above mean sea level and is anticipated to cause widespread showers throughout the state.
Additionally, strong westerly and northwesterly winds are likely to prevail across Kerala and the Lakshadweep islands in the lower atmospheric levels, further intensifying the rainfall.
On Sunday, the meteorological department issued an orange alert for districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki. An orange alert signifies a risk of very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour timeframe.
Meanwhile, yellow alerts indicating expected rainfall between 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm have been issued for Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
The alert levels are likely to remain in effect for the upcoming days, with Ernakulam and Idukki districts expected to stay under orange alert until August 5.
In an official bulletin, the IMD stated: "Due to the cyclonic circulation and prevailing wind patterns, Kerala is predicted to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days, with the potential for extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas on August 5."
Officials are advising residents, especially in southern and mountainous regions, to stay alert and take necessary precautions against possible flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging. Disaster response teams are prepared to tackle emergencies arising from the adverse weather conditions.
