Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 6 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for extremely high rainfall across Kerala today.

This Wednesday morning, Kerala will experience predominantly cloudy skies, with rainfall expected to commence by early afternoon and continuing throughout the evening into the night.

The current temperature is approximately 24 degrees Celsius, projected to peak at around 29 degrees Celsius before declining later in the day.

A red alert has been activated for the Kannur and Kasaragod districts, while an orange alert is in effect for Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kozhikode.

Additionally, a yellow alert has been announced for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts.

In response to these conditions, all educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur, and Thrissur districts will remain closed for the day.

The IMD has also warned of strong winds reaching up to 60 km/h along the Kerala coastline.

Extremely heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation exceeding 204.4 mm in a single day, which poses serious risks.

The State Disaster Management Authority has indicated a pattern of intense rain over brief intervals, raising concerns about flash floods and lightning-induced floods.

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday resulted in flooding and waterlogged roads, particularly in urban regions like Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad.

Following the recent rains, rivers and dams, especially in Idukki and Wayanad, are nearing or have reached critical alert levels.

On Tuesday, public frustration was evident in Thrissur as pothole repairs were underway during the rain. Locals expressed their discontent over the inappropriate timing of the work, prompting the Thrissur Corporation Mayor, M.K. Varghese, to visit the scene and clarify that no work was being done.

The fishing community in the state is also keen to resume operations following the end of the trawling ban on July 31. However, rough seas have hindered fishing activities in some areas where the ban is still in effect.

Point of View

It's crucial to emphasize the importance of community preparedness in light of the IMD's warnings. With extreme weather becoming more frequent, our focus must be on informing and protecting our citizens. We stand with the people of Kerala during these challenging times.
