Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, March 4 (NationPress) In a notable interstate partnership, the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), the human resources division of Kerala's Tourism Department, has initiated an extensive training program aimed at tourism officials from Tamil Nadu, highlighting Kerala's innovative and sustainable tourism practices.
The program was officially launched online by Tourism and Public Works Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas at the KITTS campus. It is designed to train 60 Tourism Information Officers from Tamil Nadu who are working at both state and district levels.
Organized in two sessions, the first batch commenced on Wednesday, while the second is set to take place from March 10 to March 12.
During the opening remarks, Riyas emphasized the significance of knowledge sharing in realizing the full potential of tourism in South India.
“Kerala is dedicated to offering a world-class educational experience to our Tamil Nadu colleagues. By sharing our successful models, we aspire to encourage collective progress that benefits the entire region,” he stated.
Tourism Secretary K. Biju praised KITTS for leading professional development efforts that enhance regional collaboration and strengthen institutional capabilities.
The training curriculum strongly focuses on Kerala’s globally acclaimed Responsible Tourism (RT) initiatives, sustainable destination management tactics, and promotional strategies that align tourism growth with environmental and social accountability.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain practical insights into the policy frameworks and implementation methods that have established Kerala as a standard for community-driven and eco-friendly tourism development.
This initiative builds on discussions from August 2025, when a KITTS delegation met with officials from the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department in Chennai to explore collaborative efforts in skill development, human resource training, and certification for tourist guides.
The knowledge-sharing initiative is anticipated to expand, with a planned visit by Tamil Nadu District Collectors to examine Kerala’s District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) model and the 'Destination Challenge' framework.
Officials characterized this collaboration as a foundational step towards structured “tourism diplomacy”, aimed at cultivating a resilient, competitive, and sustainable travel ecosystem throughout southern India via shared expertise and institutional alliances.
