What Are the Achievements of 11 Years of 'Garib Kalyan' Under Modi Government?

New Delhi, June 9 (NationPress) Over the past eleven years, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has relentlessly focused on the upliftment and emancipation of the marginalized and downtrodden, embodying its motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, which has become the cornerstone of its governance.

The guiding principle of Antyodaya has remained central to the BJP-led NDA government, consistently striving for the welfare of the poor, farmers, and underprivileged populations through policies aimed at village and rural development.

As the PM Modi-led government marks eleven years in power and one year of Modi 3.0, here’s an overview of key achievements:

Improved Standard of Living in Rural India

Over the last decade, approximately 171 million people have been lifted out of extreme poverty. According to the World Bank’s Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief, the percentage of the population living on less than $2.15 per day has drastically decreased from 16.2 percent in 2011-12 to merely 2.3 percent in 2022-23.

The standard of living in rural India has significantly improved, with the average Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) soaring from Rs 1,430 in 2011–12 to Rs 4,122 in 2023–24, nearly tripling.

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) Ensuring Clean Water

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, over 15.59 crore rural households now have access to tap water, with more than 12 crore connections added in just the last five years. Additionally, over 9.35 lakh schools have tap water connectivity.

Housing for Everyone

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has transformed the narrative of home ownership for many families in urban and rural India. With two components—Urban and Grameen—nearly 4 crore houses have been completed under the scheme.

In the Urban segment, more than 92.72 lakh homes have been delivered, with over 90 lakh houses owned by women. In rural areas, 2.77 crore houses have been completed under PMAY-Grameen.

Importantly, 60 percent of these homes have been allocated to SCs and STs, while 25.29 percent have been registered in the names of women, fostering gender equity.

SAUBHAGYA Illuminating Lives

The initiation of SAUBHAGYA and the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) has significantly transformed lives. Currently, 2.86 crore households have been electrified under the SAUBHAGYA scheme, and 100 percent village electrification has been accomplished under DDUGJY.

Ayushman Bharat: A Healthier India

Introduced to enhance access to quality healthcare and provide financial protection to vulnerable families, Ayushman Bharat offers free health insurance coverage to 55 crore Indians, making it the world’s largest health assurance scheme. The Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme extends this coverage to all citizens above 70 years.

Insurance Schemes

The Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) has significantly contributed to affordable social security, enrolling 51.06 crore individuals by May 2025, while the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PM JJBY) has 23.64 crore subscribers.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan

To date, the Swachh Bharat Mission has facilitated the construction of over 12 crore household toilets across the nation, with more than 5.64 lakh villages declared Open Defecation Free (ODF).

Clean Cooking Fuel for Women

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has provided 10.33 crore LPG connections, liberating millions of women from smoke and drudgery. As of March 2025, over 32.94 crore individuals are active LPG consumers.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana

Launched to alleviate the hardships faced by the poor during the economic disruptions caused by Covid-19, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) has been providing free rations to 81 crore individuals since April 2020.

PM Jan Dhan Yojana

The PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) aims to provide universal banking access, boasting 55.17 crore accounts, with 30.80 crore account holders being women.

PM Vishwakarma Scheme

In a rapidly modernizing economy, millions of artisans and craftsmen who previously faded into obscurity are now recognized under the BJP government. Currently, 2.37 million registered artisans and nearly 1 million beneficiaries are receiving toolkit incentives, reviving traditional skills.
