New Delhi, Sep 21 (NationPress) Praveen Khandelwal, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed his enthusiastic support for the upcoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms that will take effect on Monday, branding them a "monumental advance" under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that this reform will yield significant benefits for both consumers and traders nationwide.
In an interview with IANS, Khandelwal, who serves as the Lok Sabha MP from Chandni Chowk, stated that this marks the first instance since Independence where such comprehensive GST reforms are being introduced, designed to alleviate financial pressures on citizens just in time for the festive season.
"Starting tomorrow, the GST rates on over 400 items will see reductions. Numerous goods that were previously taxed at 18% and 12% are now set to be reduced to 5%. This will offer substantial relief to families, students, and all segments of society. With the festival season approaching, families will enjoy increased savings, leading to heightened spending. It’s a transformative reform that will invigorate both consumers and businesses," he commented.
Khandelwal highlighted that this initiative underscores the Modi government's commitment to alleviating the financial strain on everyday citizens.
"Every household will benefit, students will save money, and the overall purchasing power of the populace will increase," he added.
The BJP leader also criticized leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD) in Bihar for making offensive comments about the late mother of Prime Minister Modi during an election rally.
He described the remarks as "deeply distressing", stating, "Despite the Patna High Court’s remarks, Congress and opposition figures in Bihar are exploiting the Prime Minister’s late mother for their own political gain. This reflects their character. After losing public trust in Bihar, they resort to such low-level tactics."
Regarding demands from certain groups to close meat shops in the capital during the Navratri celebrations, Khandelwal remarked that the decision lies with the Delhi government.
"The Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, will make the final call," he concluded.
