New Delhi, Aug 11 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge raised concerns regarding the government's approach after the Delhi Police halted the INDIA Bloc’s protest march directed towards the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Stating that the protest was both peaceful and democratic, Kharge questioned, “If the government prevents us from reaching a government office, what could they possibly be afraid of? This is a demonstration by the people, a gathering of ordinary citizens. There’s no intent to create chaos or harm anyone. While people can sit on the roads, they could have at least accommodated all 200-300 members in one hall.”
His comments followed the detention of multiple leaders from the INDIA Bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Wayanad, Sagarika Ghose of Trinamool Congress, and Sanjay Raut from Shiv Sena (UBT), during the protest march from Parliament House to ECI headquarters.
The march was organized to contest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar and to address allegations of voter fraud occurring in Karnataka.
In addition, K.C. Venugopal, a Congress MP, condemned the restrictions, noting, “I sought permission for a peaceful demonstration at the Election Commission of India to demand the cancellation of SIR and to discuss the voter fraud we have uncovered in Karnataka. Sadly, the police and government are not permitting us to march, even for a brief moment.”
During the protest, Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party, was seen leaping over police barricades in defiance of the imposed restrictions, while numerous others tried to breach the security line and were subsequently detained.
Speaking to the press after his detention, Rahul Gandhi stated, “They (ECI) refuse to engage in dialogue, and this is the stark reality. The truth stands before the nation. This protest march is not merely political; it’s a struggle to uphold the Constitution, advocating for 'One man, one vote'. Hence, we demand a clean and accurate voter list.”
The INDIA Bloc has accused the BJP-led central government of attempting to distort the electoral process by manipulating voter rolls, demanding utmost transparency from the Election Commission.
This protest represents a surge of opposition anger as the upcoming Assembly elections approach, particularly in Bihar, where the SIR process has become a contentious issue.
