Belagavi (Karnataka), Jan 21 (NationPress) The national President of Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, unveiled a towering 25-ft statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Karnataka's Belagavi on Tuesday. This event commemorates the centenary of the momentous occasion when Gandhi took on the role of Congress party Chairman and initiated the struggle for Independence against British rule.
Kharge inaugurated the statue in the company of various dignitaries including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, National Organising Secretary K.C. Venugopal, Karnataka Congress In-Charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, and other notable figures.
Designed by Arun Yogiraj, a distinguished sculptor from Mysuru who also crafted the Ram Lalla statue in Ayodhya, this statue rises to a height of 37 ft from ground level and is constructed from 20 tonnes of bronze.
Kharge commended the Congress-led Karnataka government, stating that the statue installation is a point of pride for the state. “Mahatma Gandhiji played a pivotal role in securing Independence for our nation. Under the leadership of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar, our Constitution was born,” he remarked.
“It is our collective obligation to safeguard the Constitution. Without it, our country risks descending into chaos,” Kharge underscored.
He also remarked, “Recently, numerous leaders have extolled Mahatma Gandhi. His contributions, sacrifices, and endeavors are truly remarkable. In 1924, Mahatma Gandhi held the position of National President of the Congress Party. This was both his first and last tenure in this role, as he never accepted it again after completing his term.”
Kharge emphasized the historical importance of Belagavi, stating, “Mahatma Gandhi championed the fight against untouchability and advocated for nation-building. Belagavi holds a significant place in our nation's history as it was here that Gandhi took charge as AICC President. This city is a beacon of national pride, and I am thankful for the chance to unveil this statue.”
He further announced, “Priyanka Gandhi admired a portrait depicting Mahatma Gandhi with two children. I intend to install a similar statue in Kalaburagi, my hometown.”
U.T. Khader, the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, described the event as historic. “This occasion allows us to honor the countless heroes who sacrificed their lives for our country. It also serves as a reminder of the social justice that is fundamental to our Constitution and humanity. This day motivates us to strive for a united and prosperous nation.”
He urged that this event evolve into a movement to propagate Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals. “Building a robust India is unattainable while disregarding Gandhi’s philosophies and principles. At this stage of our journey, both central and state governments, along with every citizen, must exhibit their patriotism by adhering to the Constitution.”
According to Khader, “Embracing Gandhi’s ideologies represents the truest form of patriotism. His ideal was to embrace the most marginalized in society with love. We cannot win over our children through hatred. With love, we can conquer the world – this is Gandhi’s message.”
Khader concluded by referencing the Ramayana, stating, “We need a son like Lord Ram, who renounces power; a wife like Sita, who stands by her husband; a brother like Lakshman, who supports his brother in challenging times; and individuals like Bharata, who patiently await their brother’s return. This was Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Ram Rajya.
Finally, he addressed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying, “On behalf of the people of Karnataka, I extend a warm welcome to you at this event. You symbolize Nari Shakti, not just for Karnataka or India but for the entire world. We wish you a vibrant and fulfilling future, madam.”
