Shillong/Kohima, Feb 27 (NationPress) Former BJP member and national spokesperson from Nagaland, Mmhonlumo Kikon, has been appointed as the General Secretary (Political) of the National People’s Party (NPP) effective immediately, according to party sources on Friday.
The decision for this appointment came from the party’s National President and Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma.
In his new position, Kikon will oversee structured coordination and engage in dialogues with various political entities and stakeholders throughout the Northeastern states. His responsibilities include fostering strategic partnerships and discussions to achieve the goal of “One Northeast”.
As per an official statement from the NPP, he will work closely with all state presidents and office holders in the region to monitor political trends, evaluate electoral readiness, and resolve inter-state organizational issues.
Kikon will also engage in regular discussions with the party’s elected Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assemblies, and other representatives to ensure alignment in policies and political strategies.
“He is tasked with designing and overseeing dedicated political initiatives, consultations, conventions, and outreach efforts aimed at bolstering the party's visibility and influence. All state units and party officials are instructed to provide their full support to him,” the statement added.
Kikon, who previously represented the Bhandari constituency in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, was a notable figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), serving as a national spokesperson and also as the party's prabhari for Mizoram before his resignation.
As a scholar, poet, and social activist turned politician, Kikon stepped down from his primary and active membership of the BJP on August 7, 2025, being the sole national spokesperson from the Northeast at the time.
On November 4, 2025, following a summit in New Delhi, the NPP, along with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and other regional parties and leaders from the Northeast, declared their intention to create a new regional political coalition under a unified banner.
This new platform aims to advocate for and promote the interests of the region's indigenous populations.
Chief Minister Sangma subsequently announced the formation of a nine-member committee to finalize the structure of the proposed coalition within 45 days. J. M. Sangma, the NPP’s National Working President, was appointed as the committee's convener, with Kikon serving as its member secretary.
Both the NPP and TMP maintain alliances with the BJP in Meghalaya and Tripura, respectively.
