A scheme that has already channelled over ₹4.47 lakh crore directly into farmers' bank accounts just got a second wind — and a massive one. Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, also BJP Telangana state president, on Saturday, 1 August 2026, hailed the Union Cabinet's decision to extend the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme through 2030–31, with a fresh outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Posting in Telugu, Reddy framed the decision as proof of a 'farmer-friendly government' under Modi, writing: 'Raitanna arthikanga niladokkukovalaname sankalpam' — 'the resolve that the farmer must stand tall economically.' He listed three headline figures: the extended period from 2026–27 to 2030–31, the freshly sanctioned ₹3.15 lakh crore, and the cumulative disbursement of more than ₹4.47 lakh crore already credited to beneficiary accounts since the scheme's launch.

From a 2018 Promise to a Decade-Long Commitment

PM-KISAN was born in December 2018 as a central sector scheme designed to put income directly in farmers' hands — ₹6,000 a year, paid in three equal instalments, straight into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. No middlemen, no paper trails, no leakage through procurement chains. The initial approval covered 2019–20 to 2021–22, and successive extensions have kept the pipeline open. The Cabinet's latest decision stretches that commitment by another five years, signalling that direct income support to the farm sector is now a structural fixture of central government spending — not a temporary measure. The scale is worth pausing on. ₹3.15 lakh crore over five years averages to roughly ₹63,000 crore annually — a recurring fiscal commitment that dwarfs many standalone welfare programmes. Combined with the ₹4.47 lakh crore already disbursed, the scheme's total projected outflow across its lifetime would cross ₹7.5 lakh crore.

Why Reddy's Voice Carries Weight in Telangana

Reddy's amplification of this announcement is not incidental. As BJP's Telangana state president, he is speaking directly to a state where agriculture remains a politically charged issue and where the party is working to consolidate its rural base. Telangana's farmers — many dependent on paddy and cotton — are among the core target beneficiaries of PM-KISAN. A Cabinet-level extension of this scale, announced ahead of potential state-level political contests, gives the BJP a concrete, numbers-backed talking point on farmer welfare.
