Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Wednesday outlined the scope and status of the ongoing redevelopment of Secunderabad Junction, one of Hyderabad's busiest railway hubs, in a detailed post on X. The Minister, who also serves as BJP Telangana state president, broke down the project into key design features, completed components and works currently in progress.

The Minister's post catalogued the station's planned architecture, including 'iconic station buildings', a 'two-level air concourse', a 'through-the-roof' covering over platforms, multi-level parking, 26 lifts and 32 escalators, metro connectivity via skywalks, modern passenger amenities, a solar power plant, EV charging facilities and advanced security systems with comprehensive CCTV coverage.

Under works already completed, the post listed a temporary booking office, the Railway Protection Force building, the Kazipet-end Foot Over Bridge and the south-side approach road. Works in progress, as enumerated by the Minister, include south-side basement works, the south station building, the south arrival area, north multi-level parking, the north station building, air concourse construction, cover-over-platform works, the Hyderabad-end Foot Over Bridge, travelator-integrated FOBs, underground water tanks, a Sewage Treatment Plant and the connectivity skywalk linking Secunderabad East and West Metro stations.

Policy backdrop

The Secunderabad redevelopment is part of the Amrit Bharat Stations scheme, announced in 2023, under which Indian Railways is upgrading more than 1,300 stations nationwide. The template emphasises air concourses above platforms, multi-modal links with urban transit, sustainability features such as rooftop solar and EV charging, and standardised security and accessibility infrastructure.

Since 2022, the national operator has accelerated station upgrades at major junctions and state-capital hubs, replacing colonial-era buildings with concourse-led designs. Telangana's flagship projects, led by Secunderabad and Kazipet, sit within this broader push to modernise high-footfall stations across South Central Railway territory.

Stakeholders and impact

For daily commuters and long-distance passengers, the redeveloped Secunderabad Junction is expected to ease congestion through the two-level air concourse, improve last-mile connectivity via skywalks to the Hyderabad Metro Rail network, and expand parking through multi-level structures on both the north and south sides.

The integration of 26 lifts and 32 escalators, along with travelator-equipped foot over bridges, is aimed at improving accessibility for senior citizens, passengers with disabilities and families with heavy luggage. The solar plant and sewage treatment plant signal a shift toward lower operational emissions and water recycling at one of the city's largest transit nodes.

Attention will turn to target completion dates for the north and south station buildings and the air concourse, which together form the visual and functional core of the redeveloped junction. Formal milestones around the metro skywalk handover, the Hyderabad-end Foot Over Bridge and the Sewage Treatment Plant commissioning are likely to be flagged in upcoming railway works updates.
