Kolkata, July 23 (NationPress) Authorities are revisiting the cases against Monojit Mishra, the main suspect in the alleged rape of a law college student in Kasba, as per reports on Wednesday.
According to sources from the city police, a total of 12 cases have been filed against Mishra for various offenses, including hooliganism, inflicting injuries with weapons, assaulting junior students by recruiting anti-social elements on campus, and, most critically, multiple allegations of sexual harassment targeting female students.
Out of these 12 cases, two have already been reopened, with Mishra being formally arrested in connection to these. One of these reopened cases dates back to 2023, involving charges of both hooliganism and sexual assault.
The second case, reopened, was registered in 2024 on hooliganism charges.
The police and their legal teams are meticulously reviewing the remaining 10 cases to determine their viability for reopening.
However, questions arise regarding whether timely police action on the previous 12 cases could have prevented the rape incident within the law college.
As of now, four individuals have been apprehended regarding this case. The three main suspects in the rape are Monojit Mishra, Jaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. Police have identified Mishra as the principal offender, while the other two are noted as his accomplices in this grievous act.
The fourth individual arrested is Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard of the law college, who, according to the victim's statement made immediately after the incident on June 25, was described as the "sole helpless" witness to the crime.
Additionally, new allegations have emerged against Mishra for reportedly facilitating the admission of unqualified students at the law college in Kasba annually, in exchange for substantial cash payments ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh.
