Kolkata, Aug 13 (NationPress) – Kolkata and its surrounding areas are gearing up for another series of rallies and a protest march at midnight on August 14, demanding justice for the RG Kar rape and murder victim.
Various organizations, including medical professionals' groups and social movements, have initiated calls for candlelight vigils and gatherings under the 'Raat Dokhol' (Reclaim the Night) initiative.
Last year, thousands poured into the streets of Kolkata at midnight on August 14, conducting a candlelight vigil to denounce the horrific rape and murder that occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On the anniversary of this tragic incident, similar events are scheduled in Kolkata and its outskirts.
The Raat Dokhol Oikko Mancha (Reclaim the Night United) has planned a gathering outside the Academy of Fine Arts in South Kolkata from 9 p.m. on August 14 until 5 a.m. on August 15.
"We are calling for a gathering similar to last year. We will once again amplify our voices to advocate for women's rights. We will demand justice for our beloved daughter who was lost last year. Through songs, dramas, and films, we will organize a peaceful assembly in the city to convey our message," stated Shatabdi Das, the convener of the platform.
Additionally, these rallies and protests will be organized by both doctors and local citizens. Midnight 'Reclaim the Night' processions are planned across Kolkata.
Punyabrata Goon, convenor of the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), West Bengal, mentioned, "Several rallies and candlelight vigils will take place in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and South 24 Parganas districts. The people will once again reclaim the night and fill the streets with their demands."
Members of various Left organizations will also gather at a key intersection in Kolkata to participate in the protest march.
On August 9 last year, the body of a postgraduate trainee was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
