Hyderabad, March 23 (NationPress) Krishna Bharati, a dedicated Gandhian and the daughter of esteemed freedom fighter the late Pasala Krishna Murthy, has sadly passed away in her home on Sunday at the age of 92.

She took her last breath at her residence in Snehapuri Colony after a short illness.

Originating from the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, she was the second daughter of freedom fighters Pasala Krishna Murthy and Anja Lakshmi.

Throughout her life, Krishna Bharati was a staunch advocate of Gandhian principles and worked tirelessly for the advancement of Dalits. She generously contributed to educational institutions and goshalas.

Krishna Bharati remained unmarried and is survived by four brothers and three sisters.

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his condolences regarding her passing and honored her efforts in promoting education for the underprivileged.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects by touching the feet of Krishna Bharati during an event in Bhimavaram in 2022, where a statue of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju was unveiled.

The Prime Minister also visited the family of Pasala Krishna Murthy.

Born in 1900 in West Vipparru village, in the Tadepalligudem taluka of West Godavari district, Pasala Krishna Murthy and his wife joined the Congress party in 1921.

In 1932, they were imprisoned for hoisting the Indian flag at the office of the Bhimavaram sub-collector.

Anja Lakshmi gave birth to Krishna Bharati while imprisoned, and she spent the first ten months of her life behind bars.

The couple donated all their assets to the freedom struggle and participated in the Salt Satyagraha (Dandi March). When Mahatma Gandhi visited the West Godavari district, Krishna Murthy served as his personal secretary.

They also engaged in the Bhoodan movement initiated by Vinoba Bhave, securing housing for Dalits in their communities.

Krishna Murthy passed away in 1978.
