New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Sunday regarding the demise of Krishna Bharati, a prominent Gandhian and the daughter of the esteemed freedom fighter the late Pasala Krishna Murthy. She was wholly committed to Gandhian principles and devoted her life to nation-building based on Mahatma Gandhi's ideals.

Through a message on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister's Office conveyed: "I am saddened by the loss of Pasala Krishna Bharathi Ji. She dedicated her life to Gandhian values and worked tirelessly towards nation-building inspired by Bapu’s ideals. She carried forward the legacy of her parents, who actively participated in our struggle for freedom. I fondly remember meeting her during an event in Bhimavaram. My heartfelt condolences to her family and followers. Om Shanti: PM @narendramodi."

Krishna Bharati passed away in Hyderabad on Sunday at the age of 92.

She took her last breath at her home in Snehapuri Colony after a brief illness.

Originating from the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, she was the second daughter of freedom fighters Pasala Krishna Murthy and Anja Lakshmi.

Krishna Bharati was a staunch advocate of Gandhian values and upheld these beliefs throughout her life. She also worked for the advancement of Dalits and contributed to educational institutions and goshalas.

She remained unmarried and is survived by four brothers and three sisters.

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his condolences for Krishna Bharati’s demise, highlighting her contributions to the educational upliftment of marginalized communities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had the honor of touching the feet of Krishna Bharati during a ceremony in Bhimavaram in 2022, which celebrated the unveiling of a statue of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju.

He also visited the family members of Pasala Krishna Murthy.

Born in 1900 in West Vipparru village in Tadepalligudem taluka of West Godavari, Pasala Krishna Murthy joined the Congress Party with his wife in 1921.

The couple had raised the Indian flag over the office of the Bhimavaram sub-collector in 1932, an act that led to their imprisonment.

Anja Lakshmi gave birth to Krishna Bharati while incarcerated, and she spent her first ten months of life in prison.

The couple donated all their assets to the freedom movement and participated in the Salt Satyagraha (Dandi March). When Mahatma Gandhi visited the West Godavari district, Krishna Murthy acted as his personal secretary.

They also took part in the Bhoodan movement led by Vinoba Bhave, facilitating land allocations for Dalits in their villages.

Krishna Murthy passed away in 1978.
