Bengaluru, June 4 (NationPress) - In response to the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Congress-led Karnataka government has come forth to defend the actions of the police, asserting that they exerted utmost effort to manage the chaotic situation. Sadly, multiple casualties are feared as a result of the incident.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated, “I refuse to hold my police department accountable for this incident. They have gone above and beyond in their efforts. It was impossible for the police to use cane charges on such a vast crowd. The gathering was truly enormous.”
“The crowd was so overwhelming that we had to cancel the procession from HAL Airport. They later requested to hold a parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium, which was also called off. The program was concluded within 30 minutes at the stadium, and I personally ensured the safe dispersal of the crowd,” Shivakumar explained.
When questioned about the number of fatalities, Shivakumar stated he could not confirm any details regarding the deaths at that time.
“The crowd was massive, leading me to transport the Secretary and President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in my vehicle. Over 5,000 police personnel were deployed to manage the crowd. I will share any information we receive regarding fatalities,” he added.
He further expressed, “This was a crowd that could not be controlled. I sincerely apologize to the people of Karnataka and Bengaluru, as the situation was overwhelming... we halted the procession. The program at Vidhana Soudha was stopped when the rain began. We even had an open vehicle arranged, but we had to cancel the victory parade.”
Meanwhile, the BJP in Karnataka criticized the Congress-led government for the tragic event. BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra visited Bowring Hospital to speak with victims and their families.
“The state government prioritized publicity over ensuring the safety of the public. I have received information indicating more than 11 deaths. Many young individuals are in ICU. According to victims, there was inadequate police presence and no ambulances. They transported their injured friends and relatives to the hospital themselves,” Vijayendra claimed.
“I demand a judicial inquiry into this incident. It is up to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to determine who should be held accountable for this tragedy,” he asserted.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his deputy Shivakumar, and Home Minister G. Parameshwara have also visited Bowring Hospital to check on the injured.
