Bengaluru, July 4 (NationPress) - On Friday, the Karnataka High Court put a hold on the trial court proceedings against Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar concerning a criminal defamation case.
The bench, presided over by Justice S.R. Krishna Kumar, issued an order that extends relief to both Shivakumar and the Karnataka Congress party. This case was initiated by the BJP's Karnataka unit.
Previously, the court had also halted the trial court processes against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, related to the same matter.
The BJP filed a criminal defamation lawsuit against Shivakumar and the Congress party, alleging misconduct regarding the distribution of a 'corruption rate card' in local newspapers and media, which was part of the party's campaign during the 2023 state Assembly elections.
According to the BJP, these advertisements were issued by KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was then the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly. The BJP claimed that Rahul Gandhi shared these advertisements on his social media account, X.
The complaint further asserted that the Congress party engaged in propaganda by releasing full-page advertisements accusing the previous BJP government of demanding a 40 percent commission, dubbing it the '40 Percent Government'.
Additionally, the Congress created posters and advertisements displaying a rate card allegedly established by the BJP government for various governmental positions and contracts.
The BJP contended that the dissemination of these advertisements, which detailed purported bribe rates and commissions for government roles, significantly tarnished the party’s reputation. At the time, the BJP government was under the leadership of then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
The BJP also criticized the Congress for using the term 'trouble engine sarkaar' to mock the BJP’s well-known slogan 'double engine sarkaar', claiming it was intended to undermine the party’s electoral chances.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar appeared before the Special MP/MLA Court on June 1, 2024, in relation to the defamation suit filed by BJP General Secretary Keshav Prasad and were granted bail.
Rahul Gandhi also presented himself before the same court in Bengaluru on July 7 concerning this case.
