Mysuru, Feb 8 (NationPress) Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy stated on Saturday that the Northeast is not merely a part of India, but rather the heart of the nation.
While speaking at the SEIL - ABVP Rashtriya Ekatmata Yatra, the Union Minister underscored the significance of national integration and cultural exchange, especially between the Northeastern states and the rest of India.
He pointed out how initiatives like Student Experience in Interstate Living (SEIL) have been vital in promoting national unity, dismantling stereotypes, and fostering enduring connections among students.
“The Northeast is not simply a region of India; it is undeniably the heart of India. We must all work together to ensure that every citizen feels included and appreciated. The SEIL initiative, which commenced in 1966, has facilitated connections across regions by enabling students to experience the richness of our diverse nation firsthand,” he remarked.
Characterizing the Northeast as a land of stunning landscapes, varied cultures, and rich traditions, Kumaraswamy reminded attendees of its historical importance.
“In Moirang, Manipur, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army raised the flag of independent India in 1944. This area is also crucial to India’s tea industry, home to 166 ethnic groups who live together as one family, enhancing the fabric of our nation,” he noted.
However, he also acknowledged the challenges faced by the region, including geographical isolation, illegal infiltration, natural calamities, and deficiencies in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
“The Northeast has made substantial contributions to our country, yet it often feels distant to many outside the region. This perception must change,” he insisted.
Focusing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the Northeast, Kumaraswamy mentioned how the ‘Look East Policy’ evolved into the ‘Act East Policy’ to enhance economic growth, infrastructure, and connectivity.
“Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently acknowledged the importance of the Northeast. He refers to these states as ‘Ashtalakshmi’, recognizing their significant potential and emphasizing their advancement,” he added.
He further elaborated on Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives in the area, stating, “From fortifying borders to improving connectivity and creating economic prospects, the central government has dedicated itself to incorporating the Northeast into India’s developmental narrative.”
Kumaraswamy also honored his father, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, for his pivotal contributions to the Northeast.
“My father was the first Indian Prime Minister to make a six-day visit to the region, grasping its challenges directly. He announced a Rs 7,503.51 crore package, with Rs 6,100 crore released immediately. This was a defining moment in the development of the Northeast,” he shared.
