Film producer and educationist Latha Rajinikanth on 7 August formally launched the website for 'Makkal Meddai', a citizen-led social welfare initiative operating under 'Bharat Seva' and the Shree Dayaa Foundation, with the stated aim of retaining India's cultural heritage and glorious past. The launch, held in Chennai, also unveiled the movement's logo, banners, and membership cards.

What Makkal Meddai Stands For

'Makkal Meddai' — functioning as a model initiative within Tamil Nadu — is designed to establish 'Sabhas' (community forums) across every district, location, and village in the state. The broader national umbrella, Bharat Seva, is positioned as a people's movement inviting citizens from across the country to participate.

Latha Rajinikanth said the movement's core purpose is to 'secure the minds and culture of people of this country and to get everyone together to serve for the country's common cause.' She urged citizens to join hands so that welfare programmes reach 'the last citizen in the villages too.'

Focus on Rural Welfare and Agro-Industry

Speaking on rural outreach, Latha Rajinikanth emphasised that the movement would address issues concerning farmers, the agro-industry, and local merchants and vendors. She stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation among members first, in order to secure welfare across every region of the country.

The initiative's grassroots structure — with Sabhas at the district and village level — is intended to ensure that national-level programmes translate into on-ground impact rather than remaining top-down directives.

Call to Youth: Know India's History

Latha Rajinikanth made a pointed appeal to younger generations, urging them to read about ancient India, its heritage, and the contributions of historical leaders. 'Great lives have been sacrificed to sustain, retain, cherish and nourish the culture and heritage of this country,' she said, adding that she wished 'everyone reads a lot about our history, our heritage and understand the greatness of our kings who contributed in the ancient past.'

This appeal to cultural pride and historical awareness is central to Makkal Meddai's stated identity, distinguishing it from conventional social welfare organisations that focus primarily on economic or health outcomes.

What Comes Next

With the website now live and membership cards introduced, the immediate next step for Bharat Seva Makkal Meddai is expanding its Sabha network across Tamil Nadu's districts. A broader national rollout under the Bharat Seva framework is also envisioned, though specific timelines were not announced at the launch.
