Leh Rally and Kargil Shutdown: A Call for Ladakh's Statehood
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, March 16 (NationPress) A large crowd gathered for a rally in the town of Leh, located in the union territory of Ladakh, on Monday, while Kargil town witnessed a complete shutdown. This was in response to a call from the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), both advocating for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.
This rally marked the first significant demonstration organized by LAB since the violent protests in Leh last September. Notably, the event took place just two days after the release of Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose detention under the National Security Act (NSA) was revoked by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Ladakh's Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh, was present at the rally location at Singay Namgyal Chowk to assess security measures as additional police and security personnel were stationed throughout the town to ensure public safety.
Under the leadership of LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay, protesters marched from Singay Namgyal Chowk to Leh Polo Ground, with many participants, including a significant number of women, chanting slogans demanding statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule.
Several attendees carried images of the four individuals who lost their lives during last year's LAB-sponsored protest that escalated into violence.
Meanwhile, Kargil and nearby Drass town observed a total shutdown in response to the collaborative call from LAB and KDA, both of which have been leading the movement for statehood and the Sixth Schedule for the past five years.
No incidents of unrest were reported during the rally. Chering Dorjay expressed gratitude to the people for their strong turnout despite road blockades and restrictions imposed by local authorities. He stated, “I would like to congratulate the people of Ladakh for maintaining complete peace despite strong provocation.” He described the rally as a ‘significant success’ and emphasized that the public's support for the Apex Body is evident.
