New Delhi, Sep 17 (NationPress) Renowned Islamic scholar and former Rajya Sabha member Maulana Mahmood Madani expressed his discontent with the ongoing discussions and legislative changes pertaining to Waqf properties, questioning the government's intentions and emphasizing that the law is still "insufficient".
In a conversation with IANS, Madani pointed out that even though Parliament engaged in a comprehensive debate, the final decision was heavily influenced by the ruling BJP's majority.
"The previous Waqf law had its shortcomings, and the new amendments have only simplified the creation of more issues. While some may perceive a sense of relief, I remain unsatisfied. The court's ultimate ruling does not provide the clarity I seek," he stated.
Regarding the upcoming Bihar elections, Madani clarified that Waqf matters should remain separate from electoral politics. "Elections are distinct, and this issue is separate," he asserted.
Nonetheless, he raised alarms over claims of "vote theft", describing it as a threat not just to minorities but to all citizens of India.
“This is a grave matter. Regardless of who emerges victorious or not, the power to decide should lie with the populace,” he added.
When asked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to Imarat-e-Sharia, which expressed support for him, Madani remarked: "He should not have visited, nor should they have supported him. He is seeking votes everywhere, so his visit makes no impact."
On international issues, Madani endorsed India’s strong position against US tariffs and its ongoing oil trade with Russia.
"India must not compromise its sovereignty or submit to any major power," he declared. "If we purchase from anyone, why should America dictate our actions?"
Responding to inquiries about Indian cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav dedicating India's triumph over Pakistan to the victims of the Pahalgam tragedy, Madani expressed his disinterest in cricket.
He also dismissed Shahid Afridi's compliments for Rahul Gandhi, stating: "Rahul does not require their validation."
When asked if Muslims would feel more secure with Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister, Madani replied: "Who knows what the future holds? We will see as time unfolds."
Concerning veteran leader Azam Khan of the Samajwadi Party, he commented: "Only Azam Khan can clarify whether he feels abandoned by SP or has their support."
