Bihar: 'Made in Pakistan' bedsheets seized in Motihari, 2 vendors detained
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Police in Bihar's Motihari have detained two itinerant vendors for questioning after complaints that bedsheets carrying the label 'Made in Pakistan' were being sold in the city on Saturday, 17 October. Investigators are now tracing the supply chain to determine how the products entered the local market.
How the Case Unfolded
According to East Champaran Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat, a similar complaint had surfaced a few days earlier under the Raghunathpur police station jurisdiction. On 7 October, two young men in the Raghunathpur area were reportedly selling new bedsheets for as little as ₹200 each — a price so low it drew immediate interest from local buyers. The situation changed when a buyer noticed a tag on one of the sheets reading 'Made in Pakistan', triggering concern among residents.
The 17 October complaint, this time from the Chandmari area, prompted police to move swiftly. 'On Saturday, police received another complaint about the sale of such bedsheets in the Chandmari area, prompting further action,' SP Prabhat said.
The Alleged Supply Source
During the course of the investigation, the name of Om Sai Textiles, located at Pandal Chowk in the Banjariya police station area, emerged as a possible source of supply. The two detained vendors reportedly told police they had purchased the bedsheets from this establishment and then sold them while travelling through different localities. They claimed the products were used bedsheets sourced from various parts of India and abroad.
What Remains Unverified
Crucially, the actual origin of the bedsheets and the authenticity of the 'Made in Pakistan' labels have not yet been independently established, police confirmed. Investigators are examining how the used bedsheets reached Bihar, who was involved in their procurement and distribution, and whether a wider supply network exists. The inquiry is focusing on the textile trader's alleged role and other possible links in the chain.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are also seeking to establish who placed the original orders and from where the products were first sourced. SP Swarn Prabhat indicated that further details about the origin of the bedsheets and any possible distribution network are expected to emerge after verification of evidence and statements collected so far. The investigation remains active, and no formal arrests have been confirmed at this stage.
