Former Congress MLA Divya Maderna on Tuesday, 1 September called off her overnight sit-in outside the Returning Officer's office in Mathania, Jodhpur, after the district administration provided written assurances of a fair, transparent, and impartial election process for the upcoming 2026 Mathania Municipality polls. The protest, which had drawn attention to alleged bias during the nomination stage, ended following back-to-back discussions between senior officials and Maderna late Monday night and again Tuesday morning.

What Triggered the Protest

Maderna alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders — including the local MLA and a BJP candidate — were permitted to enter the RO's office after the 3 pm nomination deadline had lapsed. She further alleged that the local Station House Officer (SHO) personally escorted the BJP leaders inside, while a Congress candidate already present was reportedly mistreated and removed from the premises.

In a post on X, Maderna questioned the administration directly: 'If bias is allowed to enter the electoral process itself, how can public faith in free, fair and democratic elections be maintained? This is not merely a question of discrimination against a Congress candidate; it strikes at the spirit of the Constitution and the foundations of our democratic system. The Returning Officer must answer: Under whose pressure, and for what reason, was this discriminatory action allegedly taken?'

What the Administration Agreed To

Following negotiations, the Jodhpur district administration reportedly agreed to investigate the conduct of the concerned SHO and Returning Officer. Officials also assured that there would be no unnecessary interference by police or administrative personnel during the remainder of the election process.

As concrete steps toward greater transparency, two additional observers will be deployed each in the Mathania and Tinwari municipal areas. The election process will now be conducted under the direct supervision of the Additional District Collector (ADC).

Maderna's Position

Maderna stated she ended the protest upon receiving written assurances, emphasising that her goal was equal treatment for both the ruling party and the opposition. She maintained that safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process — not partisan advantage — was the central objective of the demonstration.

Notably, this episode reflects a broader pattern of opposition complaints about administrative neutrality during local body elections in Rajasthan, where the BJP currently holds power at the state level.
