Gwalior, March 11 (NationPress) The Madhya Pradesh State Tiger Strike Force (MP-STSF), in collaboration with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), apprehended the notorious wildlife smuggler Mishrilal Mahor from the Shivpuri district within the Gwalior division on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off regarding Mahor’s whereabouts, a specialized team from the State Tiger Force conducted a raid at his residence in Gohad village, located in the Bhind district, leading to his arrest, as confirmed by a senior forest official speaking to IANS.

Mahor has been accused of engaging in extensive smuggling activities involving Red Crown Roof Turtles, a species that has been under threat, and had been evading law enforcement for nearly nine years.

Previously, the State Tiger Force dismantled a smuggling operation that trafficked these rare turtles, which are indigenous to the Chambal River, to international markets, prompting the registration of a forest crime case on May 5, 2017.

In total, 16 individuals were apprehended in connection with this case across four different states, including 11 foreign nationals. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the CBI, which has arrested three additional suspects.

This arrest follows closely on the heels of another significant operation where the State Tiger Strike Force, in partnership with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, detained Tarak Nath Ghosh, the leader of a reptile smuggling ring, in Kanpur on Monday.

Ghosh, who has been implicated in three cases involving cross-border illegal trade of turtles and gharials registered in Madhya Pradesh, had been on the run for eight years, with arrest warrants issued by three different courts.

Reports indicate that Ghosh had expanded his network across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and West Bengal. He is also believed to have connections outside India, including in Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, and Singapore.

On Wednesday, both Ghosh and Mahor were presented before the court in Shivpuri district and were subsequently remanded into forest custody for ongoing investigations.
