Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, April 4 (NationPress) The ‘homestay’ initiative launched by the Madhya Pradesh government has become a remarkable success over the last two years, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the “Heart of India” through authentic local traditions, daily life, and home-cooked meals.
A senior representative from the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department shared with IANS that the influx of tourists to the expanding network of homestays is continually on the rise. Numerous homestays are strategically located along highways, in picturesque natural spots, and within tribal territories.
At present, there are 346 homestays managed by locals across 98 designated villages in Madhya Pradesh, with an additional 642 currently being constructed to accommodate future visitors.
“These homestays provide both domestic and international travelers with convenient access to the rich diversity of rural culture. Over the past two years, around 34,000 tourists have chosen to stay in these homestays, experiencing rural life firsthand,” the official remarked.
This initiative not only enhances tourists' experiences but also fulfills its primary goal of creating substantial job opportunities and income sources in rural communities.
“The families running these homestays have collectively earned Rs 6.76 crore in the last two years through delightful lodging, traditional culinary experiences, and exposure to local art forms, dance, music, and handicrafts,” the official added.
The initiative aims to revitalize the rural economy, generate employment in villages, and safeguard rural cultural heritage.
Villages with proximity to tourist hotspots, as well as those blessed with stunning natural landscapes and unique tribal cultural identities, have been incorporated into the rural tourism framework.
A prime example is Khari, a village in the Sehore district close to Bhopal, which has emerged as a ‘model tourism village’.
Khari has hosted about 209 delegates from both national and international backgrounds, including representatives from government and NGO sectors, to explore how tourism villages contribute to community-based rural economies.
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) actively promotes integrated development through regular training programs designed to enhance villagers' skills in hospitality, hygiene, and overall skill development.
