Chennai, July 22 (NationPress) The Madras High Court has raised concerns regarding the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) for its sluggishness in calling suspended Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP) H.M. Jayaram concerning an alleged kidnapping case.

Justice G. Jayachandran posed these questions while reviewing the bail requests of three individuals - V. Vanaraja, P. Manikandan, and M. Ganesan - who were detained by the Tiruvalangadu police in Tiruvallur district and placed in judicial custody on June 9.

During the session, Additional Advocate General (AAG) J. Ravindran, supported by Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) R. Muniyapparaj, informed the court that the CB-CID had scheduled the suspended ADGP's questioning for July 24.

The AAG reassured the court that the investigation was moving forward appropriately. Justice Jayachandran instructed the current investigating officer to present the case diary for the court’s examination.

The judge indicated that decisions regarding the bail motions would be made following a review of the documents and the investigation's progress.

The high-profile case took a dramatic turn on June 16, when APP A. Damodaran disclosed before Justice P. Velmurugan the alleged involvement of the senior IPS officer and Kilvaithinakuppam (Reserved) MLA ‘Poovai’ M. Jagan Moorthy of the Puratchi Bharatham party.

As per the prosecution, the case originated from an inter-caste marriage between a young man from Tiruvallur and a woman from Theni in May 2025.

Displeased with the union, the woman's father, Vanaraja, purportedly sought the assistance of the MLA and the ADGP through intermediaries to track down the groom.

On June 7, a group reportedly invaded the groom’s residence at Kalambakkam village in Tiruvallur. Discovering that the groom was absent, they abducted his 18-year-old younger brother, who was sleeping on the terrace. The mother promptly lodged a police complaint.

During the subsequent investigation, APP Damodaran claimed that the kidnapped teen was transferred to the ADGP’s official vehicle to evade police scrutiny and was later released at a nearby bus station.

After these startling revelations, the Supreme Court reassigned the investigation to the CB-CID. The case has since garnered substantial public interest due to the alleged involvement of senior officials and an elected representative.

Point of View

I recognize the gravity of the allegations surrounding this case. The involvement of high-ranking officials and the allegations of a politically connected kidnapping raise critical questions about accountability and justice. This case underscores the necessity for transparency and thorough investigations to uphold public trust in law enforcement agencies.
