Mumbai, July 25 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane announced on Friday that the newly introduced guidelines for fish feed procurement are set to enhance the efficiency of projects within the fisheries sector while simultaneously supporting local producers. He emphasized that high-quality and safe fish feed will significantly boost production and foster a more self-reliant fisheries industry in the state.
Minister Rane noted that fish feed is predominantly imported from outside the state. To promote local producers and ensure stringent quality control, the Fisheries Department has opted to enforce these new guidelines.
He mentioned that various projects have been initiated with financial backing from both the Central and state governments to bolster fisheries in Maharashtra. These projects encompass fish seed production and breeding centers, cage fish farming initiatives, bio floc systems, stocking systems, and rearing ponds.
“To effectively implement these projects and achieve optimal capacity, a substantial amount of quality fish feed is essential. All subsidized fish initiatives in the state will be mandated to procure fish feed exclusively from centrally sponsored, state-guided, subsidized, and registered fish feed manufacturers within Maharashtra,” he elaborated.
The new guidelines stipulate that fish feed must receive certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (ISI/BIS/FSSAI). The product must include a nutritional analysis detailing protein, fat, moisture, and carbohydrates, along with clear production and expiry dates on the packaging.
Issuing an official receipt or tax invoice during the supply is compulsory. Fish feed should be delivered in safe packaging and transported using clean and dry methods.
Minister Rane stated that the supplier’s GST registration is necessary and maintaining a record of farmers purchasing fish feed is mandatory.
“While focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly fish feed production, any complaints from farmers and fishermen regarding quality will be addressed promptly,” he assured.
In related news, Minister Rane mentioned that the government has adopted stringent measures to enhance maritime security, resulting in an increase of 3,000 metric tonnes in marine fish production.
“The government is actively working on two fronts: maritime security and boosting fish production. A series of actions have been implemented, including tightening marine security with 1,165 patrol boats and 1,803 drones, along with strict actions taken in 36 cases of monsoon fishing violations. Notably, Maharashtra is the first state in India to grant 100 percent agricultural status to fishing,” concluded Minister Rane.
