Mumbai, April 7 (NationPress) A significant illegal abortion and sex determination operation has been dismantled in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Four individuals, including two nurse sisters, have been apprehended, while the alleged mastermind is currently on the run, according to officials on Tuesday.

The enforcement action took place in the Satara region of the city, executed by a collaborative team from the municipal corporation's health department and the police, resulting in the shutdown of a facility that had reportedly been operating unlawfully for an extended period.

Officials revealed that the two detained sisters are professionally trained General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) nurses, who had been exploiting their credentials to orchestrate a well-organized network for illegal abortions and sex determination testing.

Following specific intelligence, the joint team conducted a raid at the site, where they discovered a woman who had been brought in for an abortion and was experiencing extreme pain.

She was promptly rescued and transferred to a government hospital for urgent medical attention, officials confirmed.

During the operation, police also apprehended the individual who had escorted the woman to the center.

Additionally, a doctor identified in the investigation has been detained for allegedly performing sonography tests and directing patients to the illegal establishment.

The supposed leader of the operation, identified as Jyoti Pawar, has evaded capture and remains at large. However, a search of her residence resulted in the confiscation of portable medical devices and a substantial stock of abortion-related medications.

Initial investigations indicated that the accused were charging approximately Rs 15,000 for illegal sex determination tests, while abortions were priced significantly higher, amounting to several lakhs of rupees.

This case has sparked serious concerns regarding the ongoing existence of illegal medical practices, particularly those associated with sex determination, which is prohibited under Indian legislation.

Officials have stated that the racket may have been operating in multiple locations, with potential connections to nearby areas such as Sillod. Special police units have been established to locate the absconding individuals and uncover the broader network.

Health Officer Paras Mandlecha mentioned that the legal action was initiated based on confidential tips.

"We had received targeted information, which led to the execution of a joint operation. Illegal equipment and pharmaceuticals were seized from the site. Stringent measures will be enforced against all individuals involved in this network," he added.

Law enforcement indicated that further investigations are ongoing, and additional arrests are anticipated in connection with the operation.
