Will Maharashtra Establish a Tourism Security Force for Visitor Safety?

Mumbai, April 28 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Tourism Minister, Sambhuraj Desai, announced on Monday that the state intends to create the 'Maharashtra Tourism Security Force (Tourism Mitra)' to enhance the tourism sector while ensuring the safety of visitors.

He mentioned that this initiative aims to deliver a secure tourism experience, taking into account the expanding opportunities and the state's rich natural and cultural diversity.

Desai detailed that the primary goal of this security force will be to provide insights about tourist attractions, as well as the cultural and historical heritage of Maharashtra.

The 'Maharashtra Tourism Security Force' will launch on a trial basis during the Mahabaleshwar Festival in Satara district, scheduled from May 1 to 4 this year.

Approximately 25 personnel will be recruited by the Maharashtra State Security Corporation via the Satara District Superintendent of Police's office. These individuals will undergo essential training to ensure tourist safety in alignment with the festival's plans. The force will operate from April 25 to August 31, 2025, with necessary vehicle provisions and additional resources. Senior officers will supervise the personnel's duties to ensure compliance. The costs associated with this initiative will be covered by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Security Corporation and the Satara District Superintendent of Police's office,” the Minister elaborated.

Desai noted that following a successful pilot at the Mahabaleshwar Festival, a comprehensive 'Maharashtra Tourism Security Force' will be established across the entire state.

This initiative aims for a target of Rs 1 lakh crore in private investments and the creation of 18 lakh direct and indirect jobs in the tourism sector.

“Tourism police will be hired on a contractual basis to assist tourists at various locations within the state, creating a sense of security for visitors and providing essential information about the region's culture, history, tourist spots, regulations, and tourism. The Tourism Department has instructed the State Security Board and Maharashtra Ex-Servicemen Corporation (MESCO) to submit employee details promptly. The 'Tourism Police' concept will ensure sustainable tourism practices and promote eco-friendly tourism,” the Minister stated.

He expressed that the launch of the Tourism Security Force is expected to rejuvenate the state's tourism industry.

This force will be dedicated to ensuring the safety of tourists, which will enhance the confidence of both domestic and international visitors, he added.

Local employment opportunities will also be generated, he mentioned.

The personnel will receive specialized training to effectively guide and protect tourists. Facilities such as CCTV, helplines, and immediate response systems will be made available at tourist sites.

Principal Secretary Atul Patne emphasized that this initiative from the Tourism Department is a positive move towards creating a security framework for tourists.

This will foster a trustworthy atmosphere at tourist attractions, he added, and is expected to boost tourist influx while providing economic advantages to local communities.

“The force will consist of trained personnel, incorporate modern technology, and have a coordinated system capable of responding promptly in emergencies. Tourists will have access to easy services through helplines, information centers, and digital platforms. Furthermore, security measures will be reinforced in collaboration with local law enforcement and administrative bodies. The Tourism Department is dedicated to understanding tourist needs and delivering services that meet their expectations. This initiative will significantly enhance Maharashtra's global tourism profile,” he added.
