Mumbai, May 19 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Minister of Transport, Pratap Sarnaik, announced on Monday the imminent introduction of an Integrated Parking Policy aimed at addressing the escalating issues related to vehicle parking. With unauthorized parking increasingly contributing to traffic congestion in major urban areas, this policy is seen as a necessary step.
The initial rollout will focus on the regions governed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
During a meeting with Municipal Commissioners from the MMRDA region, Minister Sarnaik emphasized the importance of a thorough implementation strategy, stating that any upcoming integrated parking policy must be devoid of loopholes.
“It is crucial to incorporate the insights and recommendations from the Municipal Commissioners in areas severely affected by traffic congestion,” he remarked.
He highlighted that if vehicle owners lack designated parking, local self-governing bodies must step in to create the necessary infrastructure, stressing the urgency of developing adequate parking facilities within municipal zones.
In preparation for the state's parking policy, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged for its effective execution across municipalities under the MMRDA.
Minister Sarnaik further noted that feedback from officials on parking-related challenges within municipalities will be integral to shaping the new policy.
“Every municipal corporation must plan their parks and grounds to incorporate underground parking solutions, similar to the successful model implemented by the Thane Municipal Corporation,” he stated. He also emphasized the need for collaboration with police and motor vehicle departments to eliminate unauthorized parking.
He underscored the urgency of towing vehicles that have been abandoned on roads for extended periods to clear the thoroughfares.
Moreover, he advocated for the construction of parking plazas on land earmarked for development, suggesting that the parking plaza policy established by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation should be replicated by other municipalities to alleviate the city’s parking woes in the future.
