Kolkata, June 12 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, approached a division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, demanding a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violent clashes that erupted between two factions in the Maheshtala region of South 24 Parganas district.
In his petition, the LoP also called for the swift deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the Maheshtala area, under Rabindra Nagar Police Station, where disturbances began on Wednesday, and tensions remain high.
The division bench, led by Justice Soumen Sen, has accepted the petition, although a hearing date has yet to be established.
“Earlier, the Calcutta High Court ruled regarding the Murshidabad riots in April, stating that CAPF can be dispatched anywhere in the state where communal unrest occurs. This ruling is valid until July 30. Therefore, I have brought this to the attention of the Calcutta High Court. I attempted to meet the state Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, but he declined, reportedly at the instruction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” Adhikari stated.
Additionally, Adhikari has reached out to West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, urging CAPF deployment in the affected areas of Maheshtala.
The LoP also sought permission from the DGP and the police superintendent of Diamond Harbour Police District, which oversees the troubled area, for him and another BJP legislator to visit Maheshtala to show solidarity with the Hindu families and shopkeepers who were targeted during the violence.
Previously, on Wednesday night, Adhikari requested intervention from Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to initiate disciplinary actions against the local police inspector for alleged inaction during the clashes.
“I will be meeting with the Governor... We will also raise this issue in the Assembly,” Adhikari remarked.
As of now, 18 individuals have been detained in connection with the clashes, with 14 arrests made on Wednesday night and four more early Thursday morning.
The situation in the Maheshtala area remains precarious, with most shops closed on Thursday morning. A substantial police presence, including members of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), is deployed to restore public confidence. Prohibitory orders limiting public assembly have been enforced in the locality.
