Kolkata, Oct 8 (NationPress) A fierce political battle has unfolded in West Bengal following remarks made by Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, advocating a 'tit for tat' approach in response to the increasing incidents of violence against BJP representatives in the region.
During a press briefing in Siliguri, located in the Darjeeling district, Majumdar, who previously led the BJP in the state, referenced the assaults on BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu and the Chief Whip of the party in the West Bengal Assembly, Shankar Ghosh. Both incidents occurred on Monday, with additional violence reported against a BJP legislator from Kumargram Assembly constituency on Tuesday. These attacks are reportedly linked to activists from the Trinamool Congress.
Majumdar emphasized, 'If the police do not take action, there will be retaliation. The BJP possesses considerable strength in North Bengal. The authorities still have time to apprehend the attackers.'
He further pointed out that those who assaulted Murmu and Ghosh had identified themselves as 'Soldiers of Didi', a term often used to reference the Chief Minister.
'The identities of many attackers are already known, as their faces were visible in video footage. If law enforcement fails to respond, the BJP will take necessary measures. It's unacceptable for police, funded by taxpayers, to ignore these criminals.' Majumdar stated.
In response, Arup Chakraborty, spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, cautioned that if BJP supporters act on Majumdar's comments, they would be 'playing with fire.' He added, 'Majumdar must be prepared to take responsibility for any deterioration in law and order due to his incendiary remarks.'
To recap, the vehicles of Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh were attacked on Monday afternoon at Bamundanga in the Jalpaiguri district while they were en route to Nagrakata with relief supplies for flood victims.
Murmu suffered significant injuries in that attack, allegedly at the hands of Trinamool Congress supporters, while Ghosh sustained minor injuries. Both politicians are presently receiving treatment at a Siliguri hospital.
On Tuesday, BJP legislator Manoj Kumar Oraon from the Kumargram constituency was also attacked, allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters, while delivering aid to flood-affected villagers.
