Kolkata, July 2 (NationPress) The Union Minister and president of the BJP in West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar, has taken his grievances to the Calcutta High Court, claiming that he has been subjected to unjust and repeated harassment by the West Bengal Police. The petition was accepted by the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, and the case is anticipated to be heard within this week.
In recent months, several confrontations have occurred between Majumdar and police forces. Just last month, his convoy came under attack in Diamond Harbour in the South 24 Parganas district, allegedly by supporters of the Trinamool Congress. He criticized the local police, including the District Superintendent Rahul Goswami and the SDPO, for failing to take necessary measures to safeguard him and his associates.
Majumdar expressed that the attack represented a severe threat to his safety and that of those accompanying him.
In a recent incident, he was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police while protesting against the gang-rape of a law student on her college campus in Kasba, South Kolkata. He spent the night at the police headquarters and was released the following morning, despite his refusal to sign a bail bond that was insisted upon by the officers.
Additionally, Majumdar sent a letter to City Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, detailing the ongoing police harassment he has faced. After receiving no response, he resolved to escalate the matter to the High Court.
Majumdar criticized the police for being exceptionally active when dealing with opposition parties or public protests against the current state government, yet remaining passive in addressing crimes committed by individuals affiliated with the Trinamool Congress.
After filing his petition, he took to social media, stating: "At the request of the ruling Trinamool Congress, I have experienced ongoing harassment from the @KolkataPolice. Despite prior communications with the @CPKolkata, my issues were ignored. Today, I have submitted a petition to the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court to contest this egregious misuse of police power and the unconstitutional infringement on the rights of opposition parties in West Bengal."
