Chennai, Jan 5 (NationPress) Chief Minister M.K. This first phase will see the rollout of 10 lakh laptops to college students throughout the state, representing a significant advancement toward digital empowerment in higher education.
An official announcement from the Tamil Nadu government states that this initiative is part of the DMK administration’s wider commitment to student welfare and inclusive growth. Since taking office, the Stalin-led government has rolled out several education-focused schemes, including the Tamil Pudhalvan scheme, Innovative Women scheme, First-Generation Graduate scheme, Post-Matric Scholarship programmes, and Social Justice Hostels, all designed to enhance educational access and diminish socio-economic barriers.
Continuing these efforts, the Chief Minister previously announced the distribution of 20 lakh laptops to college students in two phases, aiming to equip them with the necessary digital skills for the technology-driven landscape of today.
The launch event for the first phase is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Monday at the Chennai Trade Centre, with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also in attendance.
Under this programme, students enrolled in government engineering colleges, arts and science colleges, medical, agricultural and law institutions, polytechnics, and industrial training institutes will be the recipients of these laptops. An estimated 10 lakh students from these educational institutions are expected to benefit in this initial phase.
The government is sourcing laptops from renowned global brands such as Dell, Acer, and HP. Each device is equipped with an Intel i3 processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, Windows 11 Home operating system, MS Office 365 software, and a premium laptop bag.
Officials have stated that this initiative will significantly boost students’ digital capabilities and enhance their employment prospects. Access to modern technology will empower students to explore opportunities in fields like information technology, software development, data entry, digital marketing, graphic design, coding, web design, and emerging domains such as artificial intelligence.
The government emphasized that this scheme will contribute to increasing household incomes, bridging the rural-urban digital divide, and fostering avenues for technology-based entrepreneurship.
Describing it as a pivotal educational reform, the administration stated that this programme concretely actualizes Tamil Nadu's vision of inclusive digital development, equipping students to compete effectively in a swiftly evolving global economy.
