Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, Jan 8 (NationPress) The Congress party has garnered interest from approximately 70 individuals applying for party tickets for the forthcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), set to occur later this year, as stated by state Congress chief Vincent Pala on Thursday.
Addressing the media, Vincent H. Pala, president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), emphasized that the party is well-prepared for the GHADC elections, having undertaken most necessary groundwork in advance.
The application process was initiated around a month ago, which prompted a robust response from potential candidates across various constituencies in the Garo Hills area.
“We have been welcoming applications for the last month, and approximately 70 candidates have expressed their desire for Congress tickets. The final selection is now in the hands of the party,” Pala remarked, hinting that the screening and consultation phase is currently in progress.
Pala further indicated that the conclusive list of candidates will only be revealed following the official election schedule announced by the authorities. “In line with our longstanding practice, we will disclose our candidates once the elections are officially announced. All essential preparations for the GHADC elections are already in place,” he added.
He also highlighted that the Congress party would approach the elections with a focus on grassroots issues impacting the populace of Garo Hills, such as development, safeguarding indigenous rights, fortifying autonomous district councils, and ensuring transparent governance.
The party is optimistic about mounting a formidable challenge in the polls by nominating capable and committed candidates. The GHADC, one of three autonomous district councils in Meghalaya, is pivotal in administering tribal areas, particularly concerning land, forests, customary laws, and local governance.
These elections are perceived as politically significant, as they frequently mirror the public sentiment in the Garo Hills region prior to larger state-level contests.
With a considerable number of aspirants stepping forward, the Congress leadership interprets this response as an encouraging sign of revitalized interest and organizational strength within the party ahead of the crucial GHADC elections.
