Guwahati, June 30 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma fiercely criticized the Congress party on Monday, claiming that over 50% of its leaders regularly consume beef while hypocritically advocating for cow protection. Sarma stated to reporters, “The majority of Congress leaders indulge in beef consumption. A significant number of opposition party members sacrifice cows during Eid festivities, which leaves me bewildered about their cow protection protests. They lack the moral authority to speak on this matter.”
He also called out Congress MPs and MLAs for their beef consumption. “I wish to inquire if Rakibul Hussain eats beef. What about other Congress figures like Abdur Rashid Mandal, Rekibuddin Ahmed, or Jakir Hussain Sikdar? They all partake in beef consumption yet claim to protect cows, which is entirely unacceptable,” he remarked.
Earlier, CM Sarma reported that approximately 1,500 cows were sacrificed in the Dhubri district during Eid, a fact that he believes has been largely ignored. “During Eid, there was a significant mass sacrifice of cows in Dhubri in the name of Qurbani. I learned that around 1,450 cows were sacrificed. This is quite distressing, and I cannot condone it. Additionally, this mass sacrifice has not received adequate attention from the media,” he expressed.
Sarma further stated that discussions regarding such a vast number of cow sacrifices have been lacking on social media. “We must respect animals, and the community should feel the sorrow associated with witnessing mass cow sacrifices,” he added.
Recently, over 150 individuals were detained due to communal unrest in the Dhubri district following Eid celebrations. Tensions arose after cattle remains were discovered near a temple during Eid al-Adha, leading to widespread unrest and raising concerns about communal harmony in this sensitive border region.
“The mastermind behind the unrest has been identified. To date, more than 150 arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing,” the Chief Minister asserted, emphasizing the state government's commitment to combating communal violence.
