Kolkata, June 30 (NationPress) The West Bengal government has officially declared the continuation of Manoj Pant in his role as the Chief Secretary for an additional six months, following the nod from the Union government. Initially, Pant was set to retire on Monday (June 30).
In a bid to maintain stability, the state government had previously sought the necessary approval from the Union government a few days prior.
On Monday, the principal secretary to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received confirmation from the Department of Personnel & Training (DOPT) under the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pension—responsible for cadre management of central service officers—granting approval for Pant’s six-month extension.
Following this communication, the state secretariat promptly issued a notification for Pant's extension, marking his new end date in office as December 31.
Manoj Pant stepped into the Chief Secretary role on August 31 last year, succeeding B.P. Gopalika, whose extension request was denied by the Union government.
A seasoned administrator, Pant is a 1999-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and has held significant roles in both the Union and West Bengal governments. Prior to his current position, he served as the additional chief secretary of the state irrigation department and was the finance secretary.
His ascension to Chief Secretary came during a pivotal period when the state was grappling with serious challenges, including the infamous R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital rape and murder case, alongside widespread corruption issues.
