Kolkata, Sep 20 (NationPress) The practice among leaders of the Trinamool Congress to refer to West Bengal's spiritual figures as incarnations of the nation's revered spiritual icons continues with the latest remarks from Rajya Sabha member Ritabrata Banerjee.

At a public gathering in Bangaon, located in the North 24 Parganas district, on Saturday evening, Banerjee addressed the alleged mistreatment of Bengali-speaking residents in BJP-ruled regions, proclaiming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as an incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

"Mamata Banerjee stands out as the sole leader in India who has united individuals against communal and caste politics. Much like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, countless individuals are drawn to our Chief Minister due to her leadership. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu transcended the divisions of caste and religion, gathering followers who admired his path. Similarly, our Chief Minister commands a massive following at her rallies today, making her the contemporary embodiment of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu," stated the Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member.

This is not the first instance of comparing the Chief Minister to iconic spiritual figures.

In December 2023, State Education Minister Bratya Basu also likened Chief Minister Banerjee to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, asserting that, like him, she promotes religious unity and inclusiveness, thus qualifying her as his modern-day incarnation.

Furthermore, in December 2023, State Trinamool Congress General Secretary Kunal Ghosh referred to Mamata Banerjee as the incarnation of Saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa, while her nephew and party's General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was compared to Swami Vivekananda.

"If Mamata Banerjee is Ramakrishna Paramhansa, then Abhishek Banerjee mirrors Swami Vivekananda. Ramakrishna Paramhansa inspired many followers, yet Swami Vivekananda was his most renowned disciple. Just as the people of Bengal aspire to see the legacy of Mamata Banerjee reflected in Abhishek Banerjee, they wish to witness her contributions and sacrifices for them as well," Ghosh explained.

Earlier, in June 2022, Nirmal Maji, a three-time Trinamool Congress legislator from Uluberia (North), described Mamata Banerjee as the incarnation of Maa Sarada, the spiritual partner of Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

Maji even claimed that shortly before Swami Vivekananda's passing, Maa Sarada indicated to his followers that she would reincarnate in Kalighat, near the renowned Kali Temple.

Interestingly, Banerjee's residence is situated near the Kali Temple in Kalighat.

The Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, formally condemned Maji's remarks.

Additionally, in July of last year, Biswajit Das, the MLA from Bagda Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, drew a comparison between the Chief Minister and Rani Rashmoni, a celebrated philanthropist known for founding the iconic Dakhineswar Kali Temple near Kolkata, closely associated with Ramakrishna Paramhansa.

Point of View

I believe that the repeated likening of political figures to spiritual leaders by the Trinamool Congress is a reflection of the party's strategy to enhance its cultural and emotional appeal. Such associations are significant in the Indian political landscape where spirituality and leadership often intertwine, but they also raise questions about the authenticity of these claims.
