Kolkata, Aug 20 (NationPress) Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s Information Technology (IT) cell and the party's central observer for West Bengal, stated on Wednesday that the Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway is still entangled in the Detailed Project Report stage. He criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for being a major obstacle to the state's development.
In a post shared on his X account, Malviya highlighted the response from Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, regarding a query posed by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya.
Malviya asserted that unless the Mamata Banerjee administration is removed from power, the conditions in West Bengal will remain stagnant.
He expressed, "Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway: West Bengal is still stuck in the DPR stage. It is clear that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the biggest barrier to Bengal’s advancement. Until she departs, the state will continue to suffer. Significant changes are expected only by 2026."
The BJP leader emphasized that while the construction of the Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway has commenced in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, the initiative remains delayed in West Bengal.
He noted, "The Central Government has completed land acquisition notifications in Purulia, Bankura, and Hooghly, but progress is stalled as the state Government is persistently altering the alignment. The DPR for the West Bengal segment is still in the works, even as other states advance rapidly."
Malviya further stated that once completed, the expressway will serve as a "game-changer for connectivity and economic growth, directly linking Bengal with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while enhancing trade, tourism, and employment prospects for the populace."
He urged the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal to cease its delays concerning central government initiatives.
"Unfortunately, due to the state Government's procrastination, Bengal risks falling behind. The state deserves a development pace similar to that of other regions. It is time for the state Government to stop delaying and start collaborating for the welfare of its citizens," the BJP leader concluded.
