New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has criticized media outlets, asserting he was “misrepresented” regarding his remarks on the contentious three disqualification bills introduced by the Central government in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
“The media has twisted my statements on these bills. What I truly conveyed was, unless one is proven guilty, how can a person face disqualification from their position?” Tharoor stated.
The three disputed bills stipulate mandatory resignation or removal of the Prime Minister, chief ministers, and ministers at both the Central and state/UT levels if they have been detained or arrested for 30 consecutive days on allegations of crimes punishable by imprisonment of five years or more.
“What I actually expressed versus what was reported by the media! I made it clear (and this was before the Opposition had taken a position on the Bill) that I had not analyzed the bill, but on the surface, I saw no inherent issue with the idea that wrongdoers should resign from their ministerial roles. I emphasized that I was neither endorsing nor opposing the bill without further examination. It seems the media has done their usual distortion,” the Congress MP posted on X.
While the INDIA bloc and other opposition factions mounted significant protests, Tharoor diverged from the group, stating, “Let the Bill undergo thorough discussion by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC),” asserting that scrutiny would alleviate concerns.
However, the opposition maintained that the legislation is part of a broader agenda to undermine state governments led by parties other than the BJP.
Earlier, the INDIA Bloc convened and unanimously resolved to oppose the proposed legislation.
