Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma held a bilateral meeting in Imphal on Friday, 25 July 2025, focusing on strengthening inter-state cooperation, accelerating development, and deepening peace and harmony initiatives across the two northeastern states.

The meeting took place at the Chief Minister's official bungalow at Babupara, where Khemchand Singh received Sangma in what officials described as a cordial exchange. A senior official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said the two leaders 'exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening inter-state cooperation and development, including initiatives to promote peace and harmony.'

After the meeting, Khemchand Singh posted on his X handle: 'Today, I extended a warm welcome to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad K. Sangma, along with NPP State President Lorho S. Pfoze and five Hon'ble MLAs of the NPP, on their cordial visit to my official bungalow, where we exchanged compliments and goodwill.'

He noted that the National People's Party (NPP) had submitted a memorandum outlining certain aspirations, to which he pledged 'prompt attention and consideration.' He expressed confidence in a 'shared vision for sustainable development and inclusive growth.'

The meeting was attended by Manipur Minister for Art, Culture and Tourism Loken Khuraijam Singh, NPP Manipur President Lorho S. Pfoze, and party MLAs Thongam Shanti Singh, Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh, and Janghemlung Panmei. The NPP currently holds six seats in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, having won seven in the last elections.

NPP Office Inauguration and Annual Convention

Earlier on Friday, Sangma inaugurated the NPP's newly constructed state office at Mercy Lane, Mantripukhri, in the presence of party leaders, legislators, and office-bearers. The Meghalaya Chief Minister arrived in Imphal on a two-day visit to attend the party's annual convention in Manipur, scheduled for Saturday at the MSFDS Complex in Imphal.

Addressing party workers at the inauguration, Sangma said the new office would serve as 'an important centre for strengthening the party's organisational structure in Manipur.' He congratulated the Manipur unit for completing the facility on schedule and urged members to remain committed to the NPP's collective vision.

On his X handle, Sangma later wrote: 'Happy to be back in Imphal, Manipur, to inaugurate our new party office, an important step in strengthening our mission and deepening our connect with the people... Together, we remain dedicated to serving the people of Manipur and working with them for the peace, progress and prosperity of the state.'

Broader Context

Sangma also serves as the National President of the NPP, which leads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government in the hill state. This visit comes at a time when Manipur has been navigating a prolonged period of ethnic tension, making inter-state outreach and political consolidation by regional parties particularly significant. The NPP's presence in Manipur's assembly — though reduced from seven to six MLAs — remains a notable factor in the state's coalition dynamics.
