Raipur, April 12 (NationPress) In a crucial anti-Maoist operation within the Indravati jungle of Bijapur district, security forces have successfully neutralized Anil Punem, a notorious Maoist commander associated with the January 2025 blast in Ambeli village that resulted in the deaths of eight security personnel and a driver, as confirmed by an official on Saturday.
Punem was on the radar with a reward of Rs 5 lakh for his capture.
To date, the bodies of three uniformed Maoists have been recovered from the encounter.
The identification of the remaining two Maoists is currently underway.
From the scene of the encounter, security forces retrieved three pieces of 12 bore rifles, single shot rifles, along with other weapons, explosives, and Maoist-related materials.
A joint task force consisting of the DRG (District Reserve Guard) Bijapur, DRG Dantewada, STF (Special Task Force), and Cobra battalions engaged in a decisive confrontation with the Maoist insurgents.
In total, three Maoists were killed, with the identities of two confirmed.
Recovered items include weapons, explosives, and Maoist paraphernalia, notably three rifles.
The security forces have initiated sustained campaigns against the outlawed CPI-Maoist faction in the Bastar region, an area experiencing increased insurgent activity.
In just the past 102 days, security forces in Bijapur district have uncovered 86 bodies of hardcore Maoists, apprehended 173 individuals, and encouraged the surrender of 179 insurgents.
Throughout the Bastar Division, the total number of neutralized Maoists has reached 121.
This operation is part of a larger initiative aimed at achieving an LWE-free India by March 2026.
Despite a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this month in Bastar urging Maoists to abandon violence and return home, they continue to engage in criminal activities.
The coordinated team of security forces commenced operations based on intelligence inputs at 9 a.m. on Saturday, as per police officials.
Superintendent of Police, Bijapur, Dr. Jitendra Kumar Yadav, underscored the unwavering dedication of security personnel to restoring peace and promoting development in the region despite ongoing challenges.
Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, emphasized the effectiveness of intelligence-driven strategies that have led to recent successes, including Saturday's operation.
This mission is part of a broader effort to dismantle Maoist networks and counteract their violent activities. Security forces remain resolute in their aim to ensure stability in the region and further government development initiatives.
The accomplishments witnessed in recent months highlight the effectiveness of coordinated operations by DRG, STF, CoBRA, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CAF, and Bastar Fighters, who tirelessly operate under the guidance of Police Headquarters.
