Gurugram, April 2 (NationPress) The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has devised a strategy to construct a new drain aimed at stopping leachate from escaping the Bandhwadi landfill site into the Aravalli forests.

In addition to the drain, a boundary wall will be erected around the landfill, according to officials.

This drain and wall will be built by the corporation in front of the Bandhwadi plant and along the village's government road. This initiative is designed to prevent toxic water from the waste during the rainy season from flowing into the Aravalli and the village road.

"The MCG will undertake the construction of this drain at an expenditure of Rs 2.39 crore. The boundary wall's construction will also ensure that waste does not wash towards the highway and Aravalli," stated an official familiar with the situation.

The official further explained that leachate has been persistently flowing into the Aravalli hills from the Bandhwadi landfill, with a case regarding this matter currently pending in the NGT.

"To mitigate leachate, the NGT has mandated that corporation officials take action. The corporation has initiated its own measures. A boundary wall and drain will be constructed at the front side and along the village road," he added.

He also mentioned that the MCG has issued the tender, and once an agency is contracted, they will be given a timeline of five months to complete the project. Currently, the lack of a perimeter wall at the landfill site makes the garbage visible from the Gurugram-Faridabad road. This situation has necessitated a plan to build a boundary wall to contain the waste within its designated area.

Vikas Gupta, Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Local Bodies Department (ULB), has recently instructed the MCG to finalize the processing of old waste by June 30, 2025, emphasizing that this deadline must be adhered to without extensions.

A total of 1.12 lakh metric tonnes of new waste was deposited at the Bandhwari landfill from Gurugram and Faridabad in January and February, raising the total waste volume to 10.57 lakh metric tonnes.

Recently, the municipal corporation has issued tenders to two private agencies to commence waste disposal operations at the landfill.

These agencies are responsible for eliminating 1.4 lakh metric tonnes of waste, with the project budgeted at Rs 90.1 crore.

The Bandhwari landfill processes approximately 2,200 metric tonnes of waste from Gurugram and Faridabad daily.

An affidavit submitted by the corporation on December 16, 2024, indicated that around 8.8 lakh metric tonnes of old waste remain unprocessed despite the December 31 deadline.

The civic body's plan submitted on December 16 highlighted that Bandhwari will continue to accept fresh waste until alternative solutions, such as a charcoal plant, are established.

"Plans for constructing a drain and boundary wall at the Bandhwari landfill site have been developed to prevent leachate and garbage spread. The tender process for this has commenced," stated Nijesh Kumar, executive engineer at the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram.
