New York, Sept 23 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor, convened for a meeting aimed at enhancing the bilateral ties between their nations, as reported by the State Department. Following their discussions during the UN General Assembly, the State Department shared on X, “They anticipate further fostering the success of the U.S.-India relationship.”
Their meeting was preceded by a bilateral discussion involving Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where they concurred on the significance of continuous engagement to advance key areas.
Awaiting Senate confirmation for his ambassadorship, Gor, who also serves as President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, is a close ally of Trump and played a vital role in his electoral campaign. He previously directed the presidential personnel office, responsible for selecting and vetting political appointees for the administration.
During his Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing earlier this month regarding his nomination, Gor stated, “The US-India partnership will define the 21st Century.” He emphasized, “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond,” and added, “Our President shares a profound friendship with Prime Minister Modi, a unique bond.”
Upon assuming his role at the embassy in Chanakyapuri, Gor will be tasked with repairing relations strained by a trade conflict, which saw Trump imposing a 25 percent reciprocal tariff and an additional punitive tariff of 25 percent on Russian oil purchases.
Gor remarked at the hearing, “Enhancing US-India trade relations will not only elevate US competitiveness but also diminish China's economic influence over other countries.”
